Acquisition of a Multi-Role Aviation Training Vessel (MATV) for the Royal Australian Navy

The Multi-Role Aviation Training Vessel MV Sycamore, has the primary role of supporting maritime aviation training of Defence helicopter flight crews.

The Department of Defence established the Multi-Role Aviation Vessel Project to procure a multi-role aviation training vessel (MATV) for the Royal Australian Navy. The MATV (now MV Sycamore) is a 94-metre ship with the primary role of supporting maritime aviation training of Defence helicopter flight crews.

CAPDA Consulting provided a project team to support the design and build activities from early design review assurance, with particular focus on aviation elements, to In Service Support (ISS) procurement, and the formation of certification and safety strategies to support Navy Acceptance with the Australian Maritime Services Authority (AMSA) as the regulator.

The project team managed requirements with regulators and key stakeholders such as the Director General Technical Airworthiness (DGTA) and Directorate of Naval Platform Systems (DNPS).

CAPDA Consulting managed the schedule, certification, safety training and ISS development with initial acquisition procurement to support the vessel’s acceptance.

  • Navy certification program

  • aviation safety program

  • design reviews assurance

  • training plan

  • ISS strategy, Statement of Work with Request for Information (RFI) management

  • transition into service with a Capability Realisation Plan (CRP).
